The University of South Dakota, commonly known as USD, was founded in 1862, by the Dakota Territorial Legislature and it is the oldest university in the state. USD is located in Vermillion, SD, which is the county seat of Clay County, also known as the 10th largest city in the state, former home of various Native American tribes, first visited by Europeans in the late 1700's.
USD is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents and it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, since 1913. It is home of the largest and oldest science department in the state, also presenting an extensive Greek life, including various and numerous sororities and fraternities.
As of 2007, USD consists of 7 colleges and universities, which offer students a total of 60 graduate programs, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Beacom School of Business, the School of Education and the School of Law.
The athletic teams which represent USD in various intercollegiate championships, are known as the South Dakota Coyotes, nicknamed by fans as the `Coyotes` or simply `Yotes`, who compete in the NCAA Division I-AA in various sports areas. The university is also member of the Great West Conference, for all sports, and the majority of the popular sports events at USD take place at the DakotaDome.
